In the princess world, wishes lead to happiness. “Happily ever after” finds traction in our lives because we desperately want it to be true. But it’s not. It’s make-believe. So why do we keep exercising our wishbone, as if it will magically make our dreams come true?
The problem isn’t our wishes, but the dreams we wish for.
We place our hope in the wrong things – the wrong prince to rescue us. So even if our wishes came true, we would remain unsatisfied. Ecclesiastes 1:14 puts it like this: I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind. Everything!
There is only one prince – a King! – who can lead to “happily ever after.” That is King Jesus. Satisfaction in Him is so full and fulfilling that nothing else matters.
Today. Consider what you are wishing for. Is it fortune? Is it companionship? Is it a prince, or a king? The King of Kings is reaching out to you, having offered Himself for your happiness ever after. Lay down your sin in His hands, which were scarred to exchange it for His righteousness – and eternal life with Him.
The Gospel. If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. Mark 8:34-35
